The term “Faqay” holds deep cultural and historical significance, serving as a community name widely recognized in southern Somalia and in the neighboring countries of Somalia. Traditionally, it is an honorary title bestowed upon individuals distinguished by their profound knowledge, whether in religious, academic, or practical fields.
In 2011, a group of individuals sharing this name and a strong commitment to community service came together in response to the devastating droughts affecting Somalia. Their efforts, initially informal, focused on providing critical humanitarian assistance to vulnerable populations.
Recognizing the growing need for structured and sustainable interventions, a core group of members—both within Somalia and in the diaspora—took decisive action in 2019 to formally establish Faqay Foundation as an official non-governmental organization (NGO). Since then, the foundation has been dedicated to empowering communities, enhancing livelihoods, and promoting long-term resilience through well-coordinated humanitarian, development, and environmental initiatives.
